Our Purpose
Urban Cottage exists to design places, create art, cultivate communities, and inspire ways of living that are thoughtful, beautiful, and compassionate, for people, animals, and the natural world. We believe design is more than creating buildings; it is the practice of shaping how people experience everyday life through space, art, nature, and community. Every home, every painting, every landscape, every lesson, and every act of stewardship contributes to this purpose.
Vision
Our vision is to build Urban Cottage into a multidisciplinary creative practice, where architecture, art, education, and environmental stewardship come together to shape meaningful ways of living. We imagine it growing, in time, into a creative campus: a place where homes are designed with care, paintings celebrate everyday beauty, students come to learn, animals are protected, land is restored, communities gather, and ideas are explored.
Philosophy
Architecture shapes space. Art shapes emotion. Together, they create places people remember. Our practice moves across architecture, interior architecture, urban design, painting, teaching, research, and writing, and each discipline informs the others. Painting develops observation. Teaching deepens understanding. Research builds knowledge. Architecture gives these ideas physical form.
The Urban Cottage Ecosystem
Urban Cottage is not a single practice, but a constellation of them, each part strengthening the others, and Studio work continuing as our primary focus.
- Studio: architecture, interiors, landscapes and communities designed with purpose.
- Art: paintings that explore light, landscape, memory and emotion.
- Living: thoughtfully crafted objects and ideas for everyday living.
- Foundation: designing for communities and restoring landscapes for a better tomorrow.
- Children's Studio: a creative space for children to learn, explore and grow through nature and art.
- Learning: teaching, workshops, research and publications to share ideas, including the Journal, our ongoing record of writing, sketching and photography.
- Homestead: a living laboratory for sustainable living, farming, craft and community.
- Sanctuary: a place of compassion and protection for animals.
Ar. Sudiksha Nayak Founder · Urban Cottage
From designing spaces to understanding places.
I have always been interested in the idea of a place that feels like it belongs to you.
Perhaps that is why I became an architect.
My journey began with architecture: the intimacy of buildings, the way materials come together, how light enters a room, and how a space can influence the way we live and feel.
Over time, my curiosity grew beyond individual buildings. I began exploring urban design and the relationships between buildings, streets, landscapes, communities and the places they form together. I came to see each building as part of a much larger living environment.
Architecture, to me, has never been only about buildings. It is about creating a sense of belonging between people and place, the built and the natural, and the things we inherit and choose to create.
Urban Cottage grew from this belief.
It is my attempt to create a practice that makes room for art, research, writing, education and stewardship alongside architecture. A place for ideas to meet, and for us to question how we build, inhabit, preserve and imagine the places we want to leave behind.
At its heart, Urban Cottage is a continuation of my journey from designing spaces to understanding places, and from making buildings to exploring the larger ecosystems they belong to.
